A bright time in winter

Client enjoying their holidayFor a group of Independence Australia consumers, the sun shone brightly in the midst of winter recently as they enjoyed some valuable time away at the scenic Phillip Island. The group, all with a disability, enjoyed a much needed holiday along with their carers.

They enjoyed fish and chips on the beach, feed pelicans, toured historic sites and of course attended the Island’s famous penguin parade.

But beyond the activities, which many experienced for the first time, something deeper also occurred as they forged new friendships and got a chance to relax away from their usual surroundings. At the same time, their loved ones got some valuable time out from their sometimes demanding and constant duties as unpaid carers.

The Independence Holiday Program is provided free of charge thanks to the outstanding generosity of our donors, whose kind gifts make the trips away each year possible.

A trip away for people with a disability involves much more than just packing the car and heading off down the highway. Firstly, everyone’s unique mobility and other special needs have to be taken into account. Organisers need to ensure accommodation is accessible for someone requiring a wheelchair for mobility. At the same time, all activities need to be fully accessible so no one misses out.

The holiday program is vital as it gives people with a disability an opportunity to participate in activities many of us take for granted, like viewing the sunset on the beach.

Many participants have not had a break away for several years and have also heard of iconic tourist attractions, such as Phillip Island’s famous Penguin Parade.

All those attending were deeply grateful to the donors who made this invaluable time away possible. Thank you for giving people with a disability a bright time in the midst of a dark winter.

The holiday snaps are now up on Facebook so be sure to check them out.
