Celebrating Independence in Barwon

Celebrating Independence in BarwonIndependence Australia recently hosted 'Celebrating Independence in Barwon', a free event which brings together people with a disability, their families and carers, Support Workers and other sector professionals.

Celebrating Independence is held in a new location each year and for 2014 the beautiful Pier in Geelong played host to the annual event.

Local opera singer Tim McCallum kicked off the day with a wonderful performance before a variety of insightful and fun workshops got underway.

Guests heard from Lonely Planet's Accessible Travel Manager, Martin Heng, on the new Accessible Melbourne e-book, which is due to launch later this year. Travel writer Ken Haley presented and shared many an entertaining tale from his overseas adventures. And Tim McCallum revisited the stage to discuss his experiences of returning to work and his independence after suffering a life changing spinal cord injury aged just 18.

Parks Victoria, Travellers Aid and Riding for the Disabled also presented on the wide variety of interesting services they provide for people with a disability. In addition, guests could explore a host of information stalls from surfing to health products and training courses to employment options.

Following afternoon tea the day drew to a close with some seated Tai Chi and a boccia demonstration from the Australian Paralympic Committee.

We had a fantastic day; we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
