May 2010:-THe Australian Government launched the Disability Standards for Access to Premises. They set out the minimum access requirements for people with a disability to publicly accessible buildings. Free Advice on Modifications and Maintenance
The Home Renovation Service will give free advice on modifications, renovations and maintenance to home owners who are elderly or who have a disability. They are located at the Archicentre in Hawthorn. Visit their site at www.archicentre.com.au

Independent Living Centre
The Independent Living Centre (ILC) has several publications on bathroom and kitchen design available for purchase. It has samples of household fittings in its showroom. Their showrooms at 705 Geelong Road, Brooklyn are open to the general public. Occupational Therapists and other staff are available to offer advice.

Australian Building Code 1998 & Australian Standards
The Independence Australia Information Officer has copiesof these standards and they may also be available TAFE and public libraries. The Standards can be purchased from Standards Australia. These give basic access standards for public buildings. The Information Officer also has a copy of the Building Code of Australia relevant to access.
