Accommodation
Independence Australia provides a range of accommodation specific to the requirements of people with physical or multiple disabilities.
Long Term Supported Accommodation
Independence Australia provides long term support for people with physical disabilities who are unable to continue to live in their own accommodation. Situated in several locations throughout the Eastern and Northern suburbs of Melbourne, Independence Australia supports residents in small groups of four and five bed, purpose built homes.
Independence Australia’s vision is for the homes to be as close to independent living as possible. Residents are encouraged to access the local community whilst being provided with a level of residential care support commensurate with their needs.
Each home is staffed around the clock by Independence Australia’s residential carers who are trained to a high level of competency in the care of people with physical disabilities. Residents are encouraged and supported to participate in the daily running of the house and Independence Australia provides three specially equipped small buses to community events and personal appointments.

Short Term/Rental/Transitional - Accommodation
Independence Australia’s Accommodation Service is to support people with physical disabilities to access Office of Housing wheelchair-modified units and houses throughout Victoria.
Anyone who requires a wheelchair-accessible accommodation and income and assets that meet the Office of Housing's eligibility criteria are eligible for consideration for Office of Housing properties.
When Independence Australia receives notification of vacancies, we match clients with the housing available. Independence Australia will assist clients with the necessary application processes and forms that are required by the Office of Housing, and will also organise appropriate equipment and furnishings required.
When tenancies are achieved, Independence Australia remains in regular contact with clients to provide ongoing support.
Eligibility for Independence Australia’s Accommodation Service
Anyone who has a need for wheelchair-accessible accommodation and has income and assets that are below the Office of Housing’s limits.
Types of Housing Available
The Office of Housing properties are classified as either Transitional or Long-term.
Transitional Housing - These properties are only available until tenants move on to long-term options. A condition of eligibility for transitional housing is that applicants either have lodged an application for long-term housing with the Office of Housing or are awaiting access to a long-term option from another source e.g. an injury compensation payout.
Long Term Leases - Occasionally, some of the properties listed are available on a long-term lease basis.
Rent
The Office of Housing usually dictates that tenants and any family members living with them are charged 25% of their total income up to market rent. When 25% of total income exceeds market rent, the market rent applies.
